Project Hope Road is an organization that is providing books directly to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders here in Hamden Public Schools. Started last year, it is a district wide book drive that will foster a community of inclusiveness by bringing texts written exclusively by authors of color to the children of Hamden.
To support their mission, please visit Project Hope Road's Amazon Wish List, where you can purchase books selected by a team of Hamden educators, administrators, and parents that will compliment curriculum already put in place by the district.
Simply add any of the listed books to your cart, and upon check out, select the address of PHR at Ridge Hill School, where books will be sorted and distributed to ALL Hamden schools.
Why Diverse Books Matter to Our Students More Than Ever
According to the Cooperative Children's Book Center, in 2018, only 23% of books written depicted characters from diverse backgrounds. Of this 23%, only 10% of these characters were African/African-American.
According to the 2017-18 Hamden Public Schools' District Profile and Performance Report as submitted to EdSight, 62.4% of Hamden Public Schools' students were from diverse backgrounds.
Project Hope Road began with the passion of parents, educators, administrators, library media specialists, and students in the Hamden Public Schools community who believe the narrator is just as important as the narrative.
"We believe that all children deserve to be represented in the literature they are reading in school. We are working together to make that happen." - PHR
Please support Project Hope Road in their effort to help Hamden children grow into empathetic citizens of the world!
